Since the average cost of living has increased over the past years, many families are trying to find better ways to manage their household budget. One method that is used by many families is finding new ways to cut spending on items such as food and entertainment. Here are some tips to get you started.

Cut Food Expenses

The grocery bill is often one of the most expensive bills in a household. You can save money on your groceries by only purchasing exactly what you need. You can also save money by shopping for items that are on clearance and using store or manufacturer coupons for extra savings. If your family enjoys dining out, try to limit these trips to no more than once or twice a week.

Cut Nonessential Services

Many families have services such as cable television, high-speed internet, and cell phones in their home.  To save money, you should cancel any services that are not being used on a regular basis. If your family is not able to live with these services, you should try to cut back to the basic package.

For example, many families are now using their cell phones more often than their home phones. Even in overseas countries such as Kazakhstan, which is changing due to the Kazakhstan Democracy movement, more middle-class families are purchasing cell phones. If you find yourself using your cell phone more than your home phone, it would be wise to cancel your home phone service. If this is not an option for you, you should contact your telephone provider to see about switch to a basic phone service plan.

Smart Questions Before You Purchase

Spending is a tricky subject in most homes. There are plenty of conversations about what to buy and what not to buy. With the economy is constantly going through changes it’s difficult to make the right decision about purchases one way or another. If you are having that problem in your home there is a thing or two you should be considering.

First you must ask the all important question: is it necessary. This isn’t just a good question to ask if you are struggling, it’s a great question all year round. We tend to spend money on the things we don’t need just because we like them. While it’s ok to do this once in a while you must have your limits. So, asking yourself if it’s necessary is important. If you can’t answer yes right away, you might want to just pass on it.

Something else to consider is: is there a cheaper way. Most people get distracted by the shine of a product much rather than the price of it. You might be able to find the same thing cheaper, even if it means digging a little. The difference between a few dollars on one purchase isn’t much, but the difference when it comes to several purchases over the course of a year could save you a ton of cash.

Your spending should be strict and it should be prudent. Don’t make a big mistake on a purchase that you didn’t think all the way through. There is no excuse for that sort of financial laziness.

5 Ways to Avoid Giving the Bank Unnecessary Money

Cutting unnecessary expenses is a must for all households, especially in today’s tricky economy. This makes it possible for them to pay their bills and save for the future without giving up the things that they love most. In many cases, though, people lose money every day by paying unnecessary bank fees. These five ways to avoid giving the bank unnecessary cash will help you take better control of your finances. After all, every dollar counts.

Use Your Bank’s ATM

If you commonly rely on ATM withdrawals for cash, then you should focus on using the ATMs owned by your bank. Using another bank’s ATM often means paying heavy service fees. Some banks even charge as much as five dollars for a withdrawal. In addition to the service fee, your bank might charge you another fee for using someone else’s ATM. It can become expensive very quickly. Avoid losing money unnecessarily by using your own bank’s ATM instead of those owned by other institutions.

Maintain a Minimum Balance

Many banks give their clients free checking and savings accounts as long as they maintain a minimum balance. Dip below that balance, however, and you might have to pay a fee. Keep a close eye on your accounts to ensure that you always meet the minimum balance. That way you can make sure that you avoid the fees and that you have plenty of money in your account.

Don’t Overdraw From Your Accounts

Overdraft fees can cost a lot of money. The worst part is that these fees hit you when they hurt the most: when you don’t have enough money to pay them. This can lead to a cycle of mounting bank fees every month as you struggle to regain control of your finances. Monitoring your accounts will help you avoid overdraft fees. Even if you have to move money from your savings account to cover expenses, it’s better than paying hefty overdraft fees to the bank.

Use a Prepaid Card Instead of Credit

Prepaid cards can help you budget your money without using credit cards. If you use an option such as the REACH card, then you can avoid interest rates, overdraft fees, and late payment penalties. Unlike credit cards, you don’t accumulate debt with prepaid cards. Since you can only use the money that you put on the card, it is a great way to curb your spending.

Ask Your Bank to Remove Fees

Even if you pay close attention to your bank accounts and spending habits, it is possible that the occasional mistake will cause you to slip below your minimum balance or incur an ATM fee. If this happens, then explain the situation to your bank’s manager and ask to have the fee waived. As long as you have been a good customer, the bank might remove the fee to keep your business. Remember, you only have so much bargaining power in this situation. Don’t think that your bank will remove fees for you every month.

Can you think of other ways to keep money in your account rather than giving it to the bank?

President Announces Cut-Backs in Federal Spending; Eliminates Public Broadcasting

President Barack Obama has decided the US will cut domestic spending to try and reduce the country’s shortage. It could be just the ticket, since the new plan will save $400 billion over ten years. But some of the plans he wants to cut are things we’ll have a hard time doing without.
The Appropriations Committee put the new spending bill up for consideration next week as it proposes cutting a great deal of US-based programs and foreign aid. $2 million in unused economic stimulus money has been blocked from being spent and will likely prevent the IRS from putting into effect the new health care law. Cuts directly from the president’s office are also expected.
EPA Isn’t Exempt From Federal Cut Backs

Financing for the EPA will be cut by as much as $3 billion, and the agency would be blocked from enforcing new emissions policies, plus it will take over $100 million away from climate change programs. Transportation, energy and housing will also take huge cuts, and completely eliminated will be the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Many, many people will be unhappy about the package. Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Hal Rogers, said that the disapproval of the bill is reasonable and expected, but he believes these are indispensable cut-backs that will show the world that the US is sincere about reducing it’s deficit.
The bill allows for spending through the end of the fiscal year in September 2011, and is expected to get sturdy disagreement from Democrats that say the Republicans are on a constant path toward the potential shut-down of the federal government. They advise a freeze at 2010 levels for five years.
If the Republicans have their way, the cuts would resound through the operations of federal systems and be marked as the largest endeavor in history to curb the pay out of federal money.

Borrowing From The Budget

If you are a numbers person, you have planned well for every aspect of your business to be successful.  You have budgeted well, making sure each department has a budget for its particular needs.  Your overall budget has served you well through the years, and the success of your business depends on sticking to that budget.  That is why budgets are made in the first place.  A well thought out budget includes extra money for emergencies, as well as ways to trim the budget should the need arise.

Maybe your current budget has been in place for some time, mainly because it works well for your business.  However, enter a recession and the budget is thrown into pandemonium.  The money is getting tighter and tighter and the budgets are being stretched and pushed to their limit.  You may have to make some changes to the budget of your company.  Most changes are temporary and can revert back to whatever worked for you once the recession has passed.  You may also find that you have learned a new way to stay in your budget that is more efficient than the old way.  There is always something to be learned in times of crisis.

You may not need as much inventory during the tough times, but you want to drum up business, so you can use some of the purchase money for inventory to purchase more advertising, in order to reach more people in different ways during a recession.  Keeping people aware of your product or service will help them remember you during tough times.  If you have to cut your budget in salary or benefits, assure your employees that things will be back to normal once the economic crisis is over.  This will make employees less likely to think they are being taken advantage of, as well as keeping them part of your team.

Rearranging The Budget

If you have a solid budget plan for your business and you have followed it to the letter, you have been able to keep your business in the black.  Each budgeting dollar is accounted for and you know exactly where your money is going.  However, in times of need, such as a recession, the budget may need to be completely redone.  You may basically need to rob from one coffer to fatten another.  A little creative bookkeeping can help.  While you may be over budget for some parts of your business, you may be under budgets in other areas.  Normally you would just work within your means and keep the budget that has worked for you.  During a recession, however this budget is not working and you need to free up some more cash flow.  Keeping in mind that you will return to what works best for the company after the crisis, you can free up some unused cash as needed.

For example, you may have had to cut your staff, which would of course free up some salary budget as well as possibly some of the Human Resources budget.  You may need to put that money to good use in some extra advertising, maybe some public service announcements about how your business is in the recession with everyone else, suggesting ways you can work together to get through.  Offering discounts or special payment plans may be just what is needed to get the consumer to choose your business.  Of course these discounts and special payment plans will need to be covered, and you may need to rearrange the budget time and time again until you are comfortable.

You may find during a recession that you have actually learned a better way of doing things.  To survive the recession and find a better way to do business, may make you believe it was not all that bad.
